A brief review of language development research and the English skills of deaf children is followed by a rationale for using manually signed English with these children. The principles of Signing Exact English are explained, stressing that to obtain maximum visual input English should be signed exactly as it is spoken, including synonyms, word endings, idioms, etc. The major portion of the book consists of line drawings and descriptions of signs for numbers, the alphabet, contractions, affixes, approximately 3200 vocabulary items, and a listing of signs grouped by families, utilizing the same movement and differing in hand shape only. Several pages of selected references and resources for further study are also included. (Author/AMH).
