Jeremy Belknap papers

Papers of Jeremy Belknap, Congregational clergyman, historian, and one of the founders of the Mass. Historical Society. He was pastor at the First Church, Dover, N.H., 1767-86; and minister of the Federal Street Church (now the Arlington Street Church), Boston, Mass., from 1787 to his death. Among his historical writings are the History of New Hampshire, The Foresters, and American Biography. The collection consists of historical papers collected by Belknap, in particular materials related to the Louisbourg Expedition during the French and Indian War, and his contemporary correspondence and papers; sermons and notes (1762-1798); materials on his writings; materials on the Oneida Indians and the Society for Propagating the Gospel among Indians and Others in North America; letters to Belknap in response to his questions relating to the history of slavery in Massachusetts; diaries, many in interleaved almanacs (1758-1798); a letterbook (1768-1788); commonplace books (1766-1798); and miscellaneous papers and small volumes.
