The Dearborns ; a discourse commemorative of the eightieth anniversary of the occupation of Fort Dearborn, and the first settlement at Chicago ; read before the Chicago historical society, Tuesday, Dec. 18, 1883. With remarks of Hons, John Wentworth
Godfrey Dearborn (b.ca.1600) emigrated about 1639 from Exeter, Devonshire, England to Massachusetts, and moved later to Exeter, New Hampshire. About ten years later, he moved to Hampton, New Hampshire. Descendants and relatives lived in New England and elsewhere. Henry Dearborn (1751-1830) was a physician who served in army during the Revolutionary War, becoming a colonel. He was present at Bunker Hill, Quebec, Saratoga, Monmouth, and Yorktown. He later was a federal congressman from Massachusetts, then Secretary of War under President Thomas Jefferson, and became a Major General during the War of 1812. He married three times, settled in Boston, and in 1822 was appointed as minister to Portugal. It was while he was Secretary of War that a new military post was built in Chicago, and named "Fort Dearborn.".
