Papers of the family of Newburyport, Mass. native John Hay Farnham, lawyer and aide to Gov. James B. Ray of Indiana. Correspondents include Farnham's parents, William and Hannah Bliss Emerson Farnham; his aunt, Mrs. Catharine Hay; his uncle, the younger Rev. William Emerson; his step-grandfather, Rev. Ezra Ripley; his brothers, Daniel and William Emerson Farnham; and his wife, Evelyn M. Leonard Farnham. Contents of the letters include a description of the death of the elder Rev. William Emerson during the Revolutionary War; an account of a duel between two Harvard students in 1810; and a description of a fire in Newburyport in 1811. Several letters, including two from Henry Clay, and other papers relate to the visit of the Marquis de Lafayette to Indiana in 1825.
