Economic Impacts of Recreation on the Upper Mississippi River System. Recreation Expenditure Report: Development of Visitor Spending Profiles for the Upper Mississippi River System

The purpose of this report is to provide measurement of recreation- related spending in the Upper Mississippi River system. The report is divided into two parts. Part one presents both trip and durable goods spending profiles for visitors to developed recreation areas on the Upper Mississippi River system. Spending was measured through a series of on-site interviews used to measure recreation use and durable goods, and a mailback questionnaire which measured trip spending was then distributed to visitors responding to the on- site interview. The study design captured the most significant segments and categories of sending. For day users, residents outnumber nonresidents by more than five to one. Among overnight visitors, nonresidents were more than twice as numerous as residents. The second part provides both trip and durable goods spending profiles for dock owners and marina users. These spending profiles were derived from the household telephone and mailback questionnaire phase of the total study. Many tables included which provide data on user profiles and expenditures.
