Toscanini: the man behind the legend. Program no. 190 centennial program no. 5

Intermission features a distinguished conductor and musician Erich Leinsdorf who first saw Toscanini as a young man in Vienna in 1934 by attending many rehearsals maestro had there. Then one day he stepped in to be an accompanist in a rehearsal, and the two men met. Later, Leinsdorf worked for Toscanini as an assistant for opera productions in the years 1935-1937, and, having moved to New York around the same time Toscanini did, saw him frequently professionally and socially. Leinsdorf attributes Toscanini's greatest talent to the gift of communicating his excitement to musicians and through them to the public.
