Many of the letters were written by Dr. John Bell to his sister, Anne Jane Bell. The letters chiefly pertain to his visits to various cities in the United States, his schooling, and medical topics. Civil War letters include those of William Blackburn Bell, who wrote to his wife while he was a prisoner of war at Camp Morton, Indiana.
