Music critic Tim Page interviews American composer and performer Stephen Reich. Reich talks about his early music experiences with drumming and its influence on later and contemporary work. Being one of the pioneers of minimalist music, he comments on the meaning of the term "minimalist." He speaks also about his early work and the development of his ensemble Steve Reich and Musicians formed in 1966 with 3 musicians (now 18 or more). The composer discusses his Octet (1979) and The desert music, and during his interview excerpts from these works are played. At the end of the lecture he gives advice to young composers.
