Mister Peepers (Television program : 1952-1955). 1953-02-28

"When Mister Peepers and Nancy accompany Wes and Marge to the courthouse to get their marriage license, a rumor starts that Nancy and Peepers are about to get married as well"--Script synopsis provided by Everett Greenbaum. Program opens at the train station where Wes and Peepers are waiting for Marge's train. They see Mr. Remington, who wants to hear the end of the joke about the showgirls and the farm boys from last week, but the end of the joke is drowned out by the sound of the train arriving. Peepers reads through the train schedules and finds a train that runs only on Columbus Day. At the courthouse, Peepers and Nancy get there before Wes and Marge and are observed waiting there by Mrs. Porter; the gossip begins to spread. Wes and Marge have to give their information in public; as they give weight and age, the clerk changes each piece of data to make it more accurate. Wes has beauty marks on his knees. Nancy is going to Chicago with Marge to pick out her trousseau. Mrs. Gurney, all excited, recites Browning (How do I love thee, let me count the ways) to Peepers and Nancy, who are puzzled. Wes calls Robinson on the phone and reveals that the gossip column in the paper has hinted that Robinson and Nancy are getting married. Robinson calls Patience Lovewell, the columnist, to request a correction and then visits Nancy's father to explain. He begins by pointing out that they live in a small town; Mr. Remington resists this characterization of Jefferson City, pointing out that the shoe factory added eight workers last week. When he reads the gossip column and then hears that they aren't engaged after all, he is disappointed. "I was looking forward to having a scientist in the family." Finally, Peepers calls Nancy long distance in Chicago. "Sometimes rumors can come true," he tells her. At the end of the show, Wally Cox congratulates the Boy Scouts of America for their 43rd anniversary.
