  • "Correspondence of Boston literary personality Horatio Woodman, lawyer, literary agent, writer, editor of the Boston Evening Transcript, and one of the founders of the Saturday Club (a Boston literary club founded in 1856). Woodman maintained intimate friendships with prominent writers and the collection contains correspondence with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Benjamin Peirce, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Richard Grant White; other lawyers such as Richard Henry Dana; and other founders of the Saturday Club including Louis Agassiz, Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Samuel Gray Ward, and Edwin Percy Whipple. Woodman was also active in military affairs during the Civil War through his friendships with Mass. Gov. John A. Andrew and Charles Sumner. His letters to them offer military advice and discuss articles published in the Transcript related to the Civil War; and discuss Woodman's criticism of Gen. George B. McClellan."
