The account attempts to shift the blame for the loss of Tripoli and the engagements in Malta from the French to the Spanish. This appears to be the author's French version of his De bello Melitensi ad Carolum caesarem Nicolai Villagagnonis co[m]mentarius (1553); the text is preceded by a letter addressed to the Emperor, dated 28 March 1553, not included in the Latin edition. A French translation by Nicolas Edouard was published in Lyons in 1553 under the title: Le discours de la guerre de Malte ... ."
