  • "Enthält: Daphnis and Chloe / by Longus. The love romances of Parthenius and other fragments."
  • "LONGUS (whose very name is uncertain) is known to us only by his novel Daphnis and Chloe. He seems to have been a pagan sophist who lived about A.D. 200, possibly a Greek freedman in a Roman household. This romance recounts the adventures of two foundlings, brought up together by shepherds, from their infancy to their marriage. Unlike most examples of the genre, Daphnis and Chloe is concerned less with improbable incident than with the development of the main characters and their initiation into the secrets of human love. PARTHENIUS of Nicea in Bithynia, a Greek poet, was brought to Rome in 73 B.C. as a prisoner of war. After his release he settled in Italy and worked as a poet and teacher. Virgil was one of his pupils. Parthenius's poetry, mainly elegiac, is lost, and his only extant work is Erotica Pathemata, an anthology of prose summaries of love-stories from Greek literature, collected apparently for the use of Roman poets."
