  • "Collection of English poet, Robert Southey, consists of five holographic letters and one album containing unpublished notes and reflections from his Commonplace Book. The letters dated August 22, 1825 and Sept. 5, 1835 are addressed to "My Dear Sir." The letter of March 6, 1836 is written to the Bishop of Carlisle. The letter dated May 24, 1837 is written to the publisher, Joseph Cottle. It is likely the 1825 letter was sent to Southey's publisher, John Murray, in London. Southey indicates that he is sending copy of the "Vindiciae" and will presently send copy of "The Peninsular War." Southey mentions a visit of Charles J. Blomfield, Bishop of Chester, who told of published responses to John Milner. The letter of June 17, 1883 is written to English essayist, Abraham Hayward, and is a note of appreciation for Hayward's translation of "Faust." The letter of Sept. 5, 1835 discusses the education of Samuel Wesley, father of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. The letter of March 6, 1836 was written to the Bishop of Carlisle during the period when a new church was proposed for the village of Keswick. In the letter, Southey congratulates the Bishop for overcoming difficulties and concluding arrangements for the building. Southey accepted an appointment as Trustee of the church. In the final letter written to Joseph Cottle, Southey writes of the distress caused by reminiscing about the past."
