Army officer, lawyer, diplomat, and author. Corespondence, diaries (1860-66), journals (1847-71) compiled by Ewing from his correspondence and diaries, MSS. of writings, and military reports by others. The military reports relate to an expedition in 1849 to rescue snowbound immigrants to California and include Civil War reports on the West Virginia, Antietam, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga campaigns.
