Líčí ironicky jejich původ, dobu středověku s jejími legendami, vytvořenými církevní hierarchií, a dobu novou, zvláště pak období 3. republiky: generála Boulangera, aspiranta diktatury, Dreyfussovu aféru - zde v románě aféru 80.000 otýpek sena, antisemitismus, buržoasii, státníky, právníky, ženy onoho období - inspirátorky tučňácké politiky. Ačkoliv předmětem satiry je Francie, dosah zesměšnění je širší: prostě buržoasní pseudodemokratický stát na rozmezí 19. a 20. věku i s dějinami věků minulých. Překladatel (první čes. překlad byl od S.K. Neumanna) se pokusil zčeštit i jména hlavních jednajících osob. V originále je France kombinoval z různých jazyků a charakterisoval jimi své postavy. R. Krátký k nim hledal ekvivalenty v naší řeči."

Odehrává se v soudobé franc. společnosti 20. stol., jejíž konkret. realist. obraz a satira (kromě vylíčení konkurenč. boje kapitalistů o výsad. postavení v imperialist. společnosti zaměřil se A.F. zvláště na katolické církevně monarchické kruhy) prolíná se s alegoric. motivem revoluce odbojných Luciferových andělů proti samozvanému Bohu (ztělesnění slepé ničivé síly a sobectví). Andělé vedou boj o vítězství vědy a rozumu, aby umožnili lidem oproštěný tvořivý život. Závěr románu, v němž se andělé svých revoluč. snů zříkají, protože jsou přesvědčeni, že každý nový vládce by se zvrhl v nenávistného despotu, vyjadřuje autorovo zklamání nad tehd. kapitulant. postojem socialist. vůdců k buržoasii.
