  • "The Records are really an artificial collection of related materials, consisting of correspondence (copies), finding aids, and catalog cards. The Correspondence (copies) is of Gabriel Franchere, 1834-1835 and 1837-1838, and John R. Livingstone, 1840-1846. Franchere and Livingstone were American Fur Co.'s agents at Sault Sainte Marie (Mich.). Their correspondence discusses the fur business, customers, and area events, businesses, and people. Their correspondence is part of the larger Sault Sainte Marie Collection. The typed finding aids, undated, ca. 1960s, of the Sault Sainte Marie Collection list and describe the Co.'s records, as well as the papers of Franchere; Livingstone; Peter B. Barbeau; George Johnston; the Mackinac Island Collector of Customs; and Myron Scranton. Finding aids for Edward Biddle, Guy H. Carleton, and various miscellaneous items are also included. A small box of old Clarke Historical Library catalog cards provides an index to parts of the Sault Sainte Marie Collection."
