Urdu grammar and reader

This manual is based on the urdu dialect of the educated classes of pakistan. It consists of 40 lessons in romanized script. Lessons one to 17 concentrate on simple conversations and basic grammatical constructions. Lessons 18 to 40 are designed to acquaint the student gradually with more complex conversation and with literary style. Each lesson contains pattern drills and translation exercises from urdu into english and vice versa. Urdu-english and english-urdu glossaries are appended. After lesson 17 the student is ready to read in the original (arabic) script. Instructional materials in the arabic script form a companion volume, "introductory urdu readings." This course can be mastered in four semesters of 16 weeks each, the first two semesters with seven hours of classes per week, and the second with four hours of classes per week.
