This material "represents preliminary drafts of three chapters of the unpublished volume on Afghanistan in the Federal Research Division's Area Handbook/Country Studies Series." There is an historical overview from Pre-Islamic through the Soviet intervention period; an overview of the Afghan natural and social environment that includes discussion of ethnic groups, religion, education, health, and refugees; and an analysis of the Taliban regime and opposition to it. Research completed 1997.
