  • ""Since fuel costs are projected to rise significantly over the next several decades, further growth of the air transportation system becomes increasingly dependent on advances in aircraft technology and design. One important area of transport technology in which there is a potential for significant improvement is the integration of the propulsion system with the airframe. To tap this potential, engineers must increase their understanding of the aerodynamic interactions between the various components of the propulsion system and airframe well beyond the understanding which now exists. Both experimental and theoretical research is required. Experimental studies of these interactions necessitate expensive, complex models to simulate adequately the inlet and exhaust flows. Consequently, experimental investigations are only practical for limited parametric studies. For analysis and design optimization, increasing attention is being given to the use of computational methods which have been validated by a few discrete experiments. For example, both the Airbus 310and the Boeing 757 wings have been designed with the aid of numerical analysis."--P. 1."
