Merchant of Venice (Television program : 1972)
BBC broadcast of the retelling of Shakespeare's classic comedy. The merchant, Antonio, borrows money from Shylock the Jew and signs a bond stipulating that if the money is not paid when due, Shylock may cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's body. Antonio is unable to pay the debt and is brought to trial where he is defended by Portia, disguised as a man.
