A Study concerning the accommodation and convergence relationship

The design and technical details of a recording infrared optometer and haploscope are reported. Electronic circuitry, optical design and mechanical design are described. The infrared optometer has proven superior in performance to any known similar apparatus in stability, linearity, speed of response, sensitivity, ease of alignment, and freedom from noise. It is built into a haplo cope of unique fixed-mirror design developed for this study. The subject's head is fixed with a dental bite support and his pupil is dilated. Accommodation is recorded as the output of the infrared photomultiplier system while convergence is recorded as the position of the haploscope convergence arm. Both accommodation and convergence are fed into an X-Y recorder. Accommodation is also fed into a strip recorder to obtain measures of accommodation speed, reaction time, and stability.
