The Past, Present and Future of American Higher Education
Three conference papers on American higher education are presented. The first article, "The College in American Education," by Henry Steele Commager, examines the history of American higher education, identifies its major characteristics and how things are changing, and suggests some agenda items for the future. The second article, "Monopoly, Diversity, and Opportunity," by John R. Silber, addresses the lack of planning and over supply of higher educational institutions and the monopolization by state schools, higher income levels of college faculty, faculty unionization, democratic society and elitism, and the need for moral instruction. The third article, "Universities and the State: Securing Responsive and Responsible Academic Freedom," by Sir Frederick Dainton, discusses institutional academic freedom and surveys the mechanisms by which the British University system has addressed this problem.
