Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory oral history project

This group of interviews was conducted for the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Oral History Project which sought to record the establishment of the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and its contributions to the earth sciences. Interviews were conducted with a wide range of individuals, including scientists, technicians, Lamont ship captains, financial officers, purchasing agents, former directors, machine shop employees, and the spouces of Lamont's first resident scientists. Among the topics covered were research programs in geophysics and geochemistry, institutional development, operation of Lamont ships, educational experiences, patronage, international scientific activities, the social history of Lamont, and Cold War influences on scientific practice. Most interviews focus on the 1940s through 1970s.
