William Boyd was born in Ghana and spent his childhood both in there and in Nigeria. His first novel A good man in Africa won the Whitbread Prize for the best novel of 1981 and his second novel An Ice-cream war, won the John LLewelyn Rhys Memorial prize for 1982. Other books include the collection of short stories On the Yankee Station and the novels Stars and bars and The New confession.
