"En el curso 1951-1952, cuatro años antes de publicar Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov dictó en la Universidad de Harvard seis lecciones sobre el Quijote. Aquellas clases, en las que el escritor pretendía demostrar que se trataba "del libro más amargo y bárbaro de todos los tiempos", fueron publicadas póstumemente, en 1983, por Fredson Browers con el título de Lectures on Don Quixote. Nabokov no pensaba que el Quijote fuera la mejor novela de todos los tiempos; ni siquiera creía que fuera buena; es más, habría abandonado gustoso su lectura en el capítulo sexto, tras el escrutinio de la biblioteca del caballero. Quizá el gran error de interpretación de Nabokov fue enfrentarse al Quijote desde una perspectiva totalmente anglosajona, desde la devoción más absoluta a Shakespeare.
