Continuation of the chronicle of Alex Haley's family history, covering from 1882 through the 1970's. Part 3 of a seven part series, begins in 1914, with the town of Hemming growing along with the lumber company run by Wil. He sends daughter Bertha to Lane College, where she meets her future husband, a poor sharecropper's son named Simon Haley. Simon works on a Pullman to earn college money, learning the ropes from long-time porter Dad Jones. When America enters the war to end all wars, Simon enlists.
