In Northern California's Trinidad Bay Howser paddles in a hand made Yurok canoe. Then he boards the lightship Relief, the last of a fleet of floating lighthouses that marked the ship channel leading to San Francisco Bay. Finally, in Santa Cruz County he visits the concrete ship, Palo Alto, designed as a World War I tanker, but now sits grounded at the end of a pier.
