Source or sink stands can stand parameters be used to predict mountain pine beetle brood production with enough precision to be useful for assigning treatment priorities?
The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonous ponderosae Hopk.) can have devastating effects on lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.). Prioritizing stands for treatment is necessary to minimize negative economic impacts. This study evaluates the possibility to predict the relative contribution of brood beetles, by infested stands, to the next beetle generation. Stand-level assessments relating to the relative contribution by infested stands to infecting neighbouring stands would be a valuable addition to the current stand susceptibility rating system. The objective of this study was to develop a simple index of mountain pine beetle net brood production based on stand parameters and known tree-insect interactions.--Includes text from document.
