"This 1984 La Scala production of Verdi's 1843 work was the first in more than 50 years. The story which concerns hate, love and forgiveness between two brothers and between Christians and Moslems is set in Milan and the Middle East at the time of the Crusades. With a cast of international operatic stars, the opera receives spectacular treatment."
"Attempting to kill his brother Arvino, whose wife he desires, Pagano kills his father by mistake. To expiate his crime, he becomes a hermit in the Holy Land. Arvino comes to the Holy Land with his daughter Giselda who is captured by the tyrant of Antioch, Acciano, and falls in love with the tyrant's son Oronte. Oronte is mortally wounded in an escape with Giselda; he is baptised by the hermit who later dies forgiven in the arms of his brother, Arvino."
