  • "This moving and eloquent historical drama depicts the conflict between a willful and arrogant poet of a king, Richard II, and his politically pragmatic cousin, Bolingbroke. Rich with memorable scenes and speeches, this lyrical history moves from a splendid medieval tournament to the poignant surrender of a crown; from the queen's heart-shattering farewell to her king to Richard's murder'a deed "chronicled in hell" that lives forever as one of the great moments in theater. From the Paperback edition."

  • "This exclusive collection of the Bard's works has been designed specifically for readers new to Shakespeare's rich literary legacy. Each of the plays is presented unabridged and in large print, copiously annotated and preceded by a character summary and commentary. Brief scene synopses clarify confusing plots, while incisive essays describe the historical context and Shakespeare's sources. The explanatory notes are written clearly and simply, illustrated, and positioned right next to the text--no more flipping pages back and forth to squint over microscopic footnotes! Topics for further discussion, critical comments, related essays, and a chronology of Shakespeare's life and work are included among the appendices to each volume. The books boast fine black-and-white photographs of stagings of the plays at Shakespeare Festivals around the globe. From the wide margins and big print to the extent of explanatory notes -- the full text of each play is presented in the clearest and most accessible format available."@en
  • "By banishing his cousin, Bolingbroke, King Richard II prevents a dispute from turning bloody. But Richard is an arrogant and despotic ruler, prone to tyranny and vanity, who listens only to his flatterers. As he falls from favour and Bolingbroke returns to reclaim his land, Richard is humbled and grieved to see that the throne given to him by God might be taken from him by men. This book includes a general introduction to Shakespeare's life and the Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to Richard II, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary."
  • "SHAKESPEARE PLAYS, TEXTS. Richard II is one of Shakespeare's finest works: lucid, eloquent, and boldly structured. It can be seen as a tragedy, or a historical play, or a political drama, or as one part of a vast dramatic cycle which helped to generate England's national identity. Today, to some of us, Richard II may appear conservative; but, in Shakespeare's day, it could appear subversive: 'I am Richard II', declared an indignant Queen Elizabeth. Numerous recent revivals in the theatre and on screen have demonstrated the enduring power and poignancy of this drama of the downfall of an egoistic but pitiable monarch. Richard II is the seventeenth volume in the Wordsworth Classics' Shakespeare Series, in which each volume has been freshly edited by Cedric Watts."

  • "Considered one of Shakespeare's greatest history plays, The Tragedy of King Richard II concerns the ill-fated reign of a king whose eventual overthrow marks the beginning of Shakespeare's history cycle, including Henry IV, Part I, Henry IV Part II; and Henry V. This edition features an overview of Shakespeare's works by Sylvan Barnet, former Chairman of the English Department at Tufts University, as well as a comprehensive stage and screen history, dramatic criticism from the past and present, and sources from which Shakespeare derived this great work."@en
  • "This play is based on the life of King Richard II of England and is the first part of a tetralogy, often called the Henriad. Richard II is the main character of the play. It opens with Richard II being asked to adjudicate a dispute between Henry Bolingbroke (later King Henry IV) and Thomas Mowbray. The two challenge each other to a duel but Richard II interrupts the duel and banishes Bolingbroke to 6 years exile and Mowbray forever. When Richard II's uncle, John of Gaunt dies, the king seizes all of his land and money, which rightfully belongs to Bolingbroke."
