"This thesis, at the intersection of sociology of science and history of sociology, deals with global inequalities in the production and diffusion of sociological knowledge. It offers a comparative analysis of the development of the social sciences in Africa and Latin America and of the position the scientific communities of these two continents occupy at the international level. The thesis is structured into two parts: the first part conceptualises the theoretical framework and a global approach to the international and topographic constitution of sociology. The results confirm the existence of inequalities and hierarchies within the social scientific community and more particularly within sociology (north atlantic domination). The second part proposes the concept of counter hegemonic currents and aims at orienting the attention towards interesting developments at the local and regional levels that could have the potential to challenge the international relations within the discipline. This hypothesis is illustrated though one in-depth case study on the development of South African labour studies. Finally, the conclusion opens up a more general critical discussion around the international constitution of sociology, namely the fact that the claim of a sociological universalism, as represented by the major general social theories from the north-atlantic domain, is an erroneous assumption."
"Cette thèse, à l'intersection de la sociologie des sciences et de l'histoire de la sociologie, a pour objet les inégalités globales dans la production et la diffusion des connaissances sociologiques. Elle propose une analyse comparative du développement des sciences sociales en Afrique et en Amérique latine, ainsi que de leur position à niveau international. La thèse est divisée en deux parties principales : la première partie contient la conceptualisation du cadre théorique ainsi qu'une approche globale de la constitution internationale et topographique de la sociologie. Les résultats confirment l'existence d'inégalités et de hiérarchies dans la communauté scientifique en sciences sociales et plus particulièrement en sociologie (dominance nord atlantique). La deuxième partie propose le concept de courant contre hégémonique, et essaie d'attirer l'attention vers des développements intéressants à des niveaux locaux ou régionaux, qui pourraient avoir le potentiel de changer sensiblement les relations internationales au sein de la sociologie. Ce propos est illustré à travers une étude de cas approfondie, le développement des "labour studies" en Afrique du Sud, qui démontre les caractéristiques contre hégémoniques de ce domaine de recherche et d'enseignement. Le résumé, enfin, donne lieu à une discussion critique plus générale. Cette discussion révèle une conséquence des problèmes qui ont été constaté quant à la constitution internationale de la sociologie, à savoir le fait que l'assomption d'un universalisme sociologique, tel que soutenu dans les grandes théories générales issues du domaine nord atlantique, est une aspiration erronée."
