- "Watsonville, California, the self-proclaimed "Frozen Food Capital of the World," was the site of a 19-month strike which began on September 9, 1985 and involved workers from the Watsonville Canning Company and Richard A. Shaw Frozen Foods. Reacting to the companies' plans to cut wages and eliminate fringe benefits and the unresponsiveness of their Teamster local, the rank-and-file, mostly Chicano women, embarked on what would become an arduous struggle. Director Jon Silver documents union in-fighting, the hiring of scabs, police harassment of the strikers, and the emotional/financial tolls of this protracted labor dispute. When the employees of the Shaw plant agreed to a new package, the workers at Watsonville Canning pursued the fight alone. In the eighteenth month of the strike, the Watsonville Canning Corporation was foreclosed on by the Wells Fargo Bank but reorganized under new management as Norcal. Norcal offered a wage cut and abolished medical insurance. Crippled by a wildcat strike, Norcal grudgingly reinstated the health benefits. Notwithstanding widespread community support and the publicity generated by the appearances of Cesar Chavez and Jesse Jackson, the strikers enjoyed a bittersweet victory. They were forced to return to work at lower wages."
