They are never to see each other again; war has irrevocably separated them. During the grim days of war that follow, Veronica's parents are killed in an air raid, and she moves in with Boris' family. Mark, Boris' cowardly cousin, seduces Veronica; filled with guilt and feeling unworthy of Boris, she marries Mark. At the same time, Boris is killed as he tries to rescue a wounded comrade. As he dies, he dreams of Veronica in a wedding dress. Toward the end of the war, Veronica realizes that her marriage is a failure, and she leaves Mark.
