Peter Augustus Jay was born in 1776 at Elizabeth Town, New Jersey, the eldest child of John and Sarah Van Brugh Livingston Jay. His father was active in politics and many of his early years were spent in France and Spain. He attended Columbia University and then accompanied his father to England as a sectretary when he father served at Envoy Extraordinary in 1794. Returning to America in 1795, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in New York in 1797. He married Mary Rutherfurd Clarkson (1786-1838), daughter of General Matthew Clarkson, in 1807. They had eight children, 1808-1827. He died in 1843.
