"Set in World War I and based on one of several anti-war plays whose popular success in the mid twenties reflected the temper of the times. Walsh saw the theme as 'war is a farce'. However, in playing out the rivalry between two tough marines the raw and bawdy humour was toned down and to some extent reduced to cliche although the film reputedly provides a field day for lip readers. The pacifist theme emerges in the impressively staged scenes of trench warfare. Unusually for the time, these were shot at night."
