  • "The novel tells the story of Colonel Thomas Newcome and his son, Clive. Colonel Newcome is a good man of high moral character, and Clive has studied extensively and traveled abroad in hopes of becoming a great painter, an occupation that his family (especially his cousin Barnes) looks down upon. After working with the military in India for several years, Colonel Newcome returns with Clive to his home and family in England. At a welcoming party, Clive meets his cousin and friend from childhood, Ethel, and immediately falls in love. The colonel returns to India some years later, leaving Clive to travel Europe, pursue his dream and hope to have a relationship with Ethel. While The Newcomes is not one of Thackeray's most popular works, it has captivated critics since its publication. Tackling themes of religion (especially Methodism) and class in Victorian England, the novel was also the first to use the word "capitalism" as a reference to the economic system we know today."@en
