Workjobs Ii: Number Activities for Early Childhood

This curriculum guide presents a program of 20 open-ended math activities to be used to supplement the math programs in kindergarten, first, or second grade classrooms. The program consists of child-oriented counters and gameboards used to explore the concept of number from counting to making up and solving addition and subtraction equations. Each activity requires approximately 10 minutes and involves a specific action designed to illustrate a given concept. The activities involved materials such as play mousetraps and mice, leaves and trees, and airports and airplanes. The program as a whole deals with counting, 1:1 correspondence, numeral form, numeral recognition, conservation of number, relationships within and between numbers, the processes of addition and subtraction, interpreting symbols, and writing and solving addition and subtraction equations. The guide is divided into five parts. Part I introduces and describes the Workjob program. Part ii presents an overview of the activities and discusses the development of the prerequisite skills necessary for the successful use of the program. Part iii describes each activity and presents specific directions for making and assembling the counters and gameboards. Part iv provides directions for introducing the activities to the class, for assessing each child's progress, and for providing activities at various levels of concept development. Part v contains a glossary of materials and masters and patterns for each gameboard and set of counters. (Bd).
