"Papers and photographs of Anne Alinder Korbel, who was an officer in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. Alinder was the first woman from Wisconsin to enlist in the WAC, and she graduated in the first WAC Officer Candidate class at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa in August 1942. During the war she served in the Pentagon in supply and logistics, and after the war she was stationed with the United States military government in Germany. She retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1946 and later married Alfred Korbel, moving to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Four long letters written by Alinder while she served in the United States military government of Germany are highlights of the collection. She makes interesting observations about the condition of the German people; the devastation in the cities she visited, including Berlin and Frankfurt; strained relations with Russian soldiers in occupied Germany; and black market activities in Berlin. The collection also includes personnel records; documents relating to WAC uniforms, including an extensive presentation by Alinder at a WAC staff conference; programs from the first WAC Officer Candidate Class graduation; several photographs of WAC soldiers at Ft. Des Moines; and news clippings covering Alinder's status as the first Wisconsin WAC, several general WAC-related articles, and her obituary."@en . . . . "Photographs"@en . . . . . .
