An intriguing aspect of modern industrial development is the increasing complexity of the spatial organisation of production. Where historically the industrial landscape manifested a rather transparent distinction in separate areas of economic specialisation, production chains have now become widely distributed and integrated over the world. In conjunction with this development, the theoretical focus has shifted from the traditional analysis of spatial distribution of factor endowments to the organisational dimension of production, including the role of business strategies, the impact of policy-making and, most recently, transactional characteristics of industrial production.
