Eastern Bolivia the white promised land

The Indians of Bolivia, already exploited by a military dictatorship, will have to take up more of the white man's burden if South Africans and Rhodesians accept an invitation to colonize the country. White South Africans, accustomed to the excesses of their own police, will find much that is familiar in Bolivia. Bolivia is a poor country, its per capita income of about 200 pounds a year putting it at the bottom of the league of South American nations. Its adult literacy is about 30 per cent. Oil revenues have brought about some increase in prosperity in recent years, but this has been diverted to a small sector of the population and largely spent on non-essential consumer goods. Far from bringing comfort to the peasant majority, the new prosperity has in fact done the reverse, for while the prices of agricultural produce has been rigorously held down, almost everything else is imported and subject to the inflationary process. National poverty and under-development formed the theme of the Under Secretary for Immigration's argument in favour of mass immigration of whites from South African countries. This document discusses the Bolivia government's intention to encourage the immigration of South Africans to Bolivia, the present socioeconomic background of the Ayoreo Indians, and how the various missionary groups influence the Ayoreos situation in Bolivia.
