Modern Language Classroom Techniques. a Handbook

The aim of this handbook is to show the teacher ways of implementing and supplementing existing materials. The suggested teaching procedures may be used in classes of varying sizes and levels, and with any method. Although the emphasis is on teacher-made materials, many of the techniques suggested may be implemented with commercial programs, films, slides and transparencies. The handbook contains four parts: (1) The Language Class, an overview; (2) Presenting the Language; (3) Developing the Skills; and (4) Beyond Language. The following topics are discussed: an overview of the course; preparation of supplementary materials; classroom management procedures; specific techniques for teaching the language itself -- its sound system, grammar and vocabulary; ways of developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills; the teaching of culture, both daily life patterns and general civilization. The appendix contains sample lesson plans that show how several procedures and techniques may be woven into a single class period. The text is based on the belief that the success of a foreign language course depends not only on the quality of the basic program but also on the flexibility with which the teacher uses that program.
