[Josephus]

Josephus, soldier, statesman, historian, was a Jew born at Jerusalem about 37 CE. A man of high descent, he early became learned in Jewish law and Greek literature and was a Pharisee. After pleading in Rome the cause of some Jewish priests he returned to Jerusalem and in 66 tried to prevent revolt against Rome, managing for the Jews the affairs of Galilee. In the troubles which followed he made his peace with Vespasian. Present at the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, he received favours from these two as emperors and from Domitian and assumed their family name Flavius. He died after 97. As a historical source Josephus is invaluable. His major works are: History of the Jewish War, in seven books, from 170 BCE to his own time, first written in Aramaic but translated by himself into the Greek we now have.

  • "Josephus, soldier, statesman, historian, was a Jew born at Jerusalem about 37 CE. A man of high descent, he early became learned in Jewish law and Greek literature and was a Pharisee. After pleading in Rome the cause of some Jewish priests he returned to Jerusalem and in 66 tried to prevent revolt against Rome, managing for the Jews the affairs of Galilee. As a historical source Josephus is invaluable. His major works are: History of the Jewish War, in seven books, from 170 BCE to his own time, first written in Aramaic but translated by himself into the Greek we now have."@en
  • "Manuscript on paper (rough, brown; trimmed; no watermarks) of the Life of Josephus, which was perhaps an appendage to his Antiquitates. This codex appears to be one of the earliest surviving authorities for the autobiography of Josephus."
  • "This collection includes the work of Titus Flavius Josephus, born Joseph ben Matityahu. Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish scholar, historian and hagiographer, who was born in Jerusalem-then part of Roman Judea-to a father of priestly descent and a mother who claimed royal ancestry. This collection includes ""Against Apion"", ""The Antiquities of the Jews"", ""Discourse to the Greeks Concerning Hades"", ""The Life of Flavius Josephus"", and ""The War of the Jews"""@en
  • "Josephus was a first-century Pharisee, soldier, informant to the Romans, and writer. He left behind the most extensive writings on ancient Jewish history still in existence, including us the earliest independent accounts of the lives of Jesus, John the Baptist, and James the brother of Jesus. Without Josephus, we would know very little about the Essenes, the ancient Jewish group most frequently associated with the Dead Sea Scrolls, or about the beliefs of the Sadducees and Pharisees. Features include: The War of the Jews: an account of the Jewish revolt against Rome up to the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem -- The Antiquities of the Jews: a history of the Jews from Creation to the Roman occupation of Palestine -- The Life of Flavius Josephus: the autobiography of Josephus, who fought against Rome and later served the empire -- Against Apion: a defense of the origin of Judaism in the face of Greco-Roman slanders -- Discourse to the Greeks Concerning Hades: a text attributed to Josephus -- Index of parallels between Josephus's Antiquities and the Old Testament including the Apocrypha."
  • "Overview: This renowned reference book has served scholars, pastors, students, and those interested in the background of the New Testament for years. The insight given into the Essene community, the destruction of Jerusalem and the interpretations and traditions of the Old Testament in first century Judaism is invaluable. The outlook of Josephus, a late first century Pharisee and historian, on Jesus and the New Testament documents is enlightening and provocative. As an original reference, The Works of Josephus is essential to a full understanding of the first century, the time of Christ and the New Testament. Complete and unabridged, this is the best one-volume edition of the classic translation of Josephus' works. The entire text has been reset in modern, easy-to-read type; numbering corresponding to that used in the Loeb edition has been added to the text; and citations and cross-references have been updated from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers."
