  • ""In writing "General Psychology" the author has had in mind the typical introductory course in psychology in colleges of liberal arts. An attempt has been made to give a balanced and unbiased picture of scientific psychology as it is today. No particular school or point of view is followed, yet the significant and enduring contributions of them all are included. It is the author's personal experience that more than half the students who take the beginning course in psychology will follow it with at least one advanced course. Preparation of the student for further courses cannot, therefore, be ignored as an objective in the first course. It has never been demonstrated that the introductory course which lays the foundation for further courses cannot also serve well the needs of the student who confines his study of psychology to one course. The order of topics reverts to the more traditional, logical arrangement, laying a foundation and building upon it a more or less coherent superstructure. A minimum amount of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system is included. While many studies of student interest place the topic of sensation far down the list, the author is of the opinion that this depends very much upon the instructor and his enthusiasm for the topic. Students can be aroused to ask questions concerning their sensory powers and about sensory phenomena as they can about other topics. In spite of the established order of topics, any instructor may find that he can successfully make some readjustments to suit his own predilections.
