  • "This recording is a lecture given by New York Buddhist poet John Giorno at the Naropa Institute in 1979. The lecture mainly concerns the communication of poetry through various mediums such as performance art, his famous Dial-A-Poem project, poetry on the radio, and other projects including poetry on napkin rings. He also covers the history of innovative art and poetry movements of the 20th century, including Robert Rauschenberg's Experiments in Artist Technology (EAT). The second cassette includes the continuation of the class. Giorno gives his first reading of one of his long poems, Eating the sky, and then plays recordings of Patti Smith and Lenni Kaye playing and talking, and of Allen Ginsberg giving a short reading. The last part of the recording takes place on 8/16/1979 and is the continuation of a lecture that Giorno gave as well. The last few minutes of this lecture is a discussion between Giorno, Ginsberg, and a poetics class concerning Buddhism and poetics at Naropa."
