"This thesis provides a history of the organization's canning business. It shows how the business was run as a communal venture and as a joint-stock company department. And while the focus is on their fruit canning industry, it sheds some light on the people of the Community and those who later ran O.C.L.. Work was an integral part of everyday life for both groups and the long-lived preserving business tells a great deal about the beliefs and practices of everyone involved."@en
"The Oneida Community was a financially successful nineteenth-century religious utopian society. When the Community broke up in 1880, the members formed the Oneida Community, Ltd. (O.C.L.) as a joint-stock company to run their business ventures. Best known for their animal traps and tableware, the Oneida Community also made many other products, including preserved fruits and vegetables. Commercial canning was done by the Community and O.C.L. for nearly 60 years."@en
