That old cape magic

Griffin has been tooling around for nearly a year with his father's ashes in the trunk, but his mother is still very much alive, and not shy about calling on his cell phone. She does so as he drives down to Cape Cod, where he and his wife, Joy, will celebrate the marriage of their daughter Laura's best friend. But by the end of this perfectly lovely weekend, the past has so thoroughly swamped the present that the future suddenly hangs in the balance.

  • "Jack and Joy Griffin are back on Cape Cod - where they spent their hope-filled honeymoon - for a wedding. Cracks are beginning to show in Jack's peaceful family life and thirty-four year marriage. He's spent a lifetime trying to be happier than his parents, but has he succeeded?"@en
  • "On their Cape Cod honeymoon, Jack and Joy Griffin drafted a plan for their future which, after thirty years, has largely been fulfilled. They'd left Los Angeles and Griffin's scriptwriting job behind, wanting family life, and for Jack to teach at the sort of New England college to which his parents had aspired. Now back on the Cape, celebrating the marriage of their daughter Laura's best friend, things look good despite cracks appearing ... Jack drives around with his father's ashes in the car. Laura's boyfriend seems promising - but you have to be careful what you wish for - it could come true. A year later, at her wedding, Jack has a second urn in the car - and his life comes close to unravelling ..."
  • "Jack and Joy Griffin are on Cape Cod to celebrate the marriage of their daughter Laura's best friend. Sure, Jack's been driving around with his father's ashes in the trunk, though his mother's very much alive and often on his cell phone. Laura's boyfriend seems promising, but be careful what you pray for, especially if it happens to come true. A year later, at her wedding, Jack has another urn in the car, and both he and Joy have brought new dates."@en
  • "The lives of Jack and Joy Griffin always seem to come back to Cape Cod, where they honeymooned, as they experience the ups and downs of life, including the deaths of Jack's parents, the marriage of their daughter, and Jack and Joy's divorce."
