"Publisher's sample book -- chapters 1-3 of Ruskin's King of the golden river ; illustrated front board in red, green, and black for Hans Christian Andersen's the Christmas tree."
"After Gluck's cruel and greedy older brothers refuse hospitality to a mysterious visitor, their prosperous farm fails and one by one each brother makes the perilous journey to find treasure in the nearby Golden River. The King of the Golden River is the magical story of a boy named Gluck, his evil brothers, and a perilous quest to find treasure lurking in the Golden River. Majestically illustrated by award-winning artist Juan Wijngaard, this classic tale by John Ruskin, the only fairy tale the celebrated English author ever penned, is compelling proof that the simplest things in life can be the most precious."
"Two brothers were very cruel to their kind younger brother. They lived in a valley near the river that was abundant with food. One night during a storm they were cruel to a stranger that needed help. The stranger caused the storm to destroy all their belongings. So they had to move to a city. They had no money so they took the golden cup of their younger brother and threw it in the fire to melt down into a gold bar. A dwarf, the king of the river, was released from the cup by the fire and told the younger brother how to turn the river into gold. Each brother went to try and turn the river into gold but they both failed. As punishment, they both were turned into black stones. The younger brother tried and succeeded but the river did not turned into gold. The river turned his old valley back into a place with abundant food again."@en

"Gluck and his abusive older brothers are sent on a quest to find the source of the local river. While the elder brothers fail, the younger brother succeeds because he is pure of heart. A classic fairytale written with finesse by one of England's great writers."@en

"John Ruskin's The King of the Golden River exemplifies the literary fairy tale, a form which, like the literary ballad, imitates the anonymous products of popular or folk tradition. Ruskin's tale, which he wrote in 1841, two years before he began Modern Painters, tells of Hans and Shwartz, two selfish, evil brothers whose greed costs them their Edenic Treasure Valley and then their lives, and of the third brother, Gluck, whose generosity and self-sacrifice restore the valley's fertility."@en
