Soldier of the Queen

James Ogilvie, subaltern with the 114th Highlanders, the Queen's own Royal Strathspeys, is stationed on the North-West Frontier, where the ceremony, the sadism, the outrageous absurdity, and the magnificence of life in the service of the Queen Empress are in uneasy juxtaposition. He witnesses both the grim consequences of a disastrous patrol, and the formally prescribed social world of Simla, where his friendship with Major Archdale's beautiful young wife causes a different kind of stir. But when another Frontier patrol results in what is apparently ignominious failure for James, it also brings an unexpected recruit who could help make all the difference between defeat and victory in the ultimate confrontation before Fort Gazai. But only James can make the decision to use this means to success- and only success can justify the decision.
