Rampant religion and scandal sects : the interpretation of socially sensitive topics at nineteenth century utopian communities

The core component of this study is the investigation of three historic sites: Hancock Shaker Village, the Onedia Community Mansion House, and Nauvoo, Illinois. Hancock Shaker Village, located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was an active Shaker community from 1783 to 1960. Originally led by Mother Ann, the Shaker community practiced a celibate lifestyle based on early Christian principles. The Oneida Community Mansion House, located in Sherrill, New York, was built in 1862 to house John Humphrey Noyes and a large following of his fellow believers. Noyes' community members were known for their perfectionist lifestyle, complex marriage practices, and expanding business enterprise. The final historic site, Nauvoo, Illinois, was created in 1839 and became the final Mormon settlement under the leadership of Joseph Smith, Jr. Nauvoo was the birthplace of several sacred practices of the Mormon Church including polygamy, temple rituals, and baptism of the dead.

  • "Each case study has a unique and provocative approach to interpreting the history that has previously been ignored. All three sites are currently undergoing a transformation in their interpretive plans and are an asset in exploring the problems of communicating "uncomfortable" theologies to today's historic site visitors. Understanding the difficult topics of each historic site helps visitors understand broader American ideas such as religious tolerance and freedom of speech."@en
