Charlie Cartwright left Rose to go and fight in the Spanish Civil War and,pregnant with Charlie's child, Rose married gypsy Luke Barton in revenge forCharlie's desertion of her. Shortly after VE Day, with Rose happy enough and Luke agood father to little Ellie, Charlie returns home with his daughter from a Spanishmarriage.
